Subject

Science

Grade level

Any

Time duration

5 Minutes

Overview

Turn an egg into a rubbery ball

Objective

Use vinegar to change the properties of an egg.

Materials

Glass Container, Vinegar, Egg

Step-by-Step

STEP 1

In a clear glass container, place one egg.

STEP 2

Fill the container with vinegar, making sure your egg is fully submerged.

STEP 3

Wait 24 hours and change the vinegar.

STEP 4

Repeat until egg is translucent.

STEP 5

Watch your egg turn to rubber!

Conclusion

This is an easy experiment that shows what chemical reactions can do. Try using balsamic vinegar if you want a darker egg! You will know you are close to done when it no longer bubbles.

Extra Credit

The vinegar changes the composition of the egg because it is an acid. You can see this chemical reaction taking place as the egg will produce gas bubbles. After about four hours, the egg will start to float. Can you guess why?
