Toddler Time with Amethyst - Color Explorers Week 2

About Toddler Time

Toddler Time with Amethyst is a weekly play-based early childhood program at Kidzeum designed specifically for children ages 1–3 and their caregivers. Each session is thoughtfully designed to support the whole child, weaving together art, sensory play, fine motor development, music, and movement into an experience that is both joyful and intentional.

Every session follows a warm, predictable rhythm that helps toddlers feel safe and ready to engage. We begin with a Welcome Song where we greet each child by name and find one another in the group. This is a simple ritual that builds connection and helps little ones settle into the group. From there, we move into a movement activity to get our bodies ready, then dive into the guided activity at the heart of each session. We close every session with a Goodbye Song that signals a safe, celebrated transition.

Each month of Toddler Time carries its own theme, and April is all about Color Explorers. Over four weeks, children will discover the world through the colors red, blue, yellow, and green — using each color as a playful entry point into sensory learning, early concepts, and creative expression.

Every session follows a warm, predictable rhythm that young children thrive on: we begin with a Welcome Song where we greet each child by name and find one another in the group — a relational practice that encourages focus and belonging. From there, we move into a movement activity to get our bodies ready, then dive into the guided activity at the heart of the day. We close every session with a Goodbye Song that signals a safe, celebrated transition.

Each month of Toddler Time carries its own theme, and April is all about Color Explorers. Over four weeks, children will discover the world through the colors red, blue, yellow, and green — using each color as a playful entry point into art-making, sensory discovery, and early learning.

Toddler Time is free with museum admission.  Children who participate in all four sessions will receive a Color Explorers Certificate of Completion, a special keepsake celebrating everything they explored, created, and discovered.

Color of the Week: Blue! 🔵

Week two dives deep into blue — the color of the ocean, the sky, and, of course, Baby Shark. This session is a multi-sensory celebration of everything blue, combining the tactile satisfaction of play-doh with imaginative pretend play and a classic earworm. Children also craft their very own Blue Binoculars to take home, transforming into little explorers who can spot blue things everywhere they go.

Welcome Song (~5 min) Amethyst greets each child by name and invites them to share: “Can you find something BLUE in this room?” This immediately activates color awareness and gives every child a way to participate from the moment they arrive

Movement Activity (~8 min) Baby Shark Dance Party! The group moves through a joyful Baby Shark routine, incorporating swimming arms, jumping, spinning, and freezing. Amethyst uses the song’s repetitive structure — a developmental strength — to layer in blue ocean imagery throughout.

Guided Activity (~25 min) Blue Play-Doh Exploration. Children are invited to explore blue play-doh with their hands, simple tools, and ocean-themed loose parts (shells, fish cutters, wavy rollers). Amethyst introduces vocabulary like “squeeze,” “smooth,” “soft,” and “roll” while narrating what she observes children doing — a powerful language modeling technique.

Fine Motor Craft (~15 min) Blue Binocular Making. Using toilet paper rolls, blue cellophane, stickers, and yarn, children (with caregiver help) assemble their own binoculars. Tearing, pressing, and threading develop hand strength and coordination.

Sensory Component: A water-table-style sensory bin with blue-tinted water, ocean figurines, and sponges offers ongoing sensory play for early arrivals and free exploration moments.

Goodbye Song (~5 min) The familiar closing song wraps the session, with children holding their new binoculars for a peek at something blue one more time before heading out.

Take-Home Activity: Families receive a “Blue Explorer Log” sheet — a simple picture chart where caregivers can help children circle blue things they spot at home, on a walk, or in a book. The accompanying tip sheet this week focuses on the power of “sports-casting” (narrating what children are doing) to build language.

A Note from Amethyst

“Play-Doh is one of my forever favorite toddler materials because it meets kids exactly where they are. Some toddlers will spend the whole session squeezing, poking, and pulling — and that’s exactly what their hands and brains need in that moment. Others will suddenly announce they’re making a ‘fish’ or ‘the ocean,’ and we just follow their lead. We’re not aiming for a product; we’re creating the conditions for curiosity to unfold. And Baby Shark? Let’s be honest — the toddlers love it, and the adults will be humming it for the rest of the day.”
