Dear Kidzeum Family,
As of July 1, we will be entering into a period of extended closure, which may last for several months.
New guidelines released by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) on June 22 directed museums to close hands-on exhibits, which appears to preclude Children’s Museums from reopening in phase four of the state’s reopening plan. Kidzeum applied for, and received, funding through the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) in March, and those funds will run out at the end of June. Consequently, the organization can no longer bring in enough revenue to continue operating with a full staff. Kidzeum was hit particularly hard by the COVID-19 crisis, and the board and staff have worked together to choose the most responsible plan of action moving forward.
However, despite this announcement, our board and executive director will work toward a strategy to ensure Kidzeum is able to reopen its doors in the future. In the meantime, we will continue working to serve the community through initiatives such as our Superheroes for Health campaign, which encourages children to reduce the spread of COVID-19 by pairing facemasks with clever costumes. Kidzeum will also offer two summer camps: an online camp in partnership with the Illinois Math and Science Academy (IMSA) and an outdoor camp in partnership with the Springfield Park District. All camps will be held in July, and registration information can be found here.
To our members: We want you to know how much we value you. Therefore, all memberships will be extended and further details regarding benefits are coming soon. We will make any announcements regarding membership benefits on our website.
We sincerely appreciate each and every person who has walked through our doors since our grand opening on July 21, 2018. Many of you have visited us frequently and advocated for our success. You have become like family. Others have supported us from afar and have stood by Kidzeum from the very beginning. It is for you that we will continue to strategize and develop a path forward, with high hopes that we will reopen our doors, once again, to our small guests and their giant imaginations.

When will Kidzeum reopen?
We are closely monitoring the ongoing situation with the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as state and federal guidelines regarding children’s museums. We are also seeking a long-term plan to strategize and keep our museum running at a limited, in-house capacity during our extended closure. At this time, we do not have a set reopening date and will keep this page and our social media pages updated with new news as it becomes available.
What will happen to my Kidzeum membership?
All memberships will be extended and further details regarding benefits are coming soon. We will make any announcements regarding membership benefits on our website.
Will Kidzeum still hold upcoming programs and/or summer camps?
At this time, Kidzeum still plans to hold our online summer camps, and our in-person camp in partnership with the Springfield Park District (click here for more information about summer camps). All other upcoming programs are cancelled until further notice.
What other ongoing projects will Kidzeum be pursuing during closure?
The Kidzeum board and part-time staff will continue working on ongoing projects, such as our Superheroes for Health initiative, and others to prepare us for our future reopening.
